N95 Respirators for Voluntary Use (current guidance)

In direct to response Cal/OSHA Covid-19 Prevention Emergency Temporary Standards, UCSF has made available N95 filtering facepiece respirators (FFR) to the entire campus community with the primary goal of enhancing source control to minimize risk of transmissions. Please consider the following guidance:

All N95 users must complete the Cal/OSHA required training using either of these two links:

  1. Via LMS posted here http://tiny.ucsf.edu/6huM1f (log-in required)
  2. Via Qualtrics posted here http://tiny.ucsf.edu/dPQ8mV (no log-in required)
  • If you do not engage in Novel Respiratory, Airborne Isolation, or Aerosol Generating activities, N95 use is considered voluntary, with the primary goal of enhanced source control. Voluntary N95 use does not require a fit test.
  • If you are engaged in Novel Respiratory, Airborne Isolation, or Aerosol Generating activities, then a fit test is required. This is mandatory use, and the primary goal is protection of the worker.
  • If you are an unvaccinated or not fully vaccinated UCSF student or employee, you can obtain an N95 respirator to minimize risk of infection from airborne SARS-CoV-2 virus. Such use is voluntary.

For more information on requirements for mandatory use of N95 FFRs on campus, or if you need assistance evaluating the voluntary or required use of N95 FFRs in your workplace, follow instructions on our main page. You may need to request a respirator use evaluation for work, and submit your request to EH&S using this Respiratory Hazard Evaluation form.
