Questions? Contact Environment, Health and Safety

Overview

The Campus Safety Program is designed to comprehensively support the health and safety needs of all campus employees. Our dedicated Department Safety Advisors (DSAs) serve as the single point of contact for all campus personnel, offering a streamlined, one-stop solution for health and safety-related concerns.

DSAs

Our team of 10 dedicated DSAs conducts thorough inspections across more than 600 laboratories, as required by the San Francisco Department of Public Health. In addition to scheduled quarterly inspections, DSAs may also perform spontaneous inspections- if there are significant safety concerns, or during facility reviews.

Quarterly Inspections Overview

Ever quarter, our DSAs perform comprehensive inspections which encompass:

  • General Laboratory Inspection: Ensuring overall lab safety and compliance.
  • Radioactive Materials Inspection (Where necessary): Reviewing the safe use and storage of radioactive materials.

Quarterly Safety Focus: Each quarter, we emphasize a specific safety aspect to ensure comprehensive coverage throughout the year.  The focus areas for each quarter are as follows:

  • First Quarter: Chemical Safety
    • Inspection of chemical waste accumulation
    • Verification of chemical inventories
    • Assessment of chemical storage practices
  • Second Quarter: Controlled Substances
    • Evaluation of controlled substance use and storage
    • Review of accumulation procedures

Through these detailed inspections and focused quarterly reviews, UCSF ensures a safe and compliant environment for all laboratory personnel. Our DSAs are committed to maintaining the highest standards of safety and regulatory compliance across our research facilities.
