UCSF Campus Pathways for Ergonomics Assistance

Three pathways are available for UCSF Campus staff and faculty who need ergonomics assistance. Review these pathways to determine which steps to take.

Injury Prevention

Injury Prevention

If you think you need general assistance or advice on injury prevention—

Step 1.  Complete Ergonomics Essentials for Computer Users in the UC Learning Center. If performing laboratory work, also take Laboratory Ergonomics training.

These self-evaluations provide a list of recommended solutions, adjustments, and equipment. Together with your supervisor, implement any recommended solutions. Order any required equipment directly from the Approved Product Lists.

Step 2.  If there are unresolved concerns or questions after the self-evaluations have been completed, available resources have been reviewed, and recommendations have been implemented, follow up with your Department Safety Advisor for next steps. You may need to complete and submit an inquiry form with additional information, photos, and measurements so they can advise on appropriate follow up.

Step 3.  Your department is responsible for funding any changes and equipment. Order from Approved Product Lists which lists products that have been vetted for ergonomics, safety, price, quality, sustainability, warranty, and service.

Step 4.  Check in periodically. Make adjustments or changes as needed. Add ergonomics as a regular agenda item with your supervisor. Review resources at ergonomics.ucsf.edu.

 


 

Non-Occupational Health Condition

If you think you have a condition that is not related to work (e.g., pregnancy, disease, non-work-related injury) —

Step 1.  Complete Ergonomics Essentials for Computer Users in the UC Learning Center. If performing laboratory work, also take Laboratory Ergonomics training.

These trainings and self-evaluations provide a list of recommended solutions, adjustments, and equipment. Together with your supervisor, implement any recommended solutions. Order any required equipment directly from the Approved Product Lists.

Step 2.  If there are any unresolved concerns or questions after the self-evaluations have been completed, available resources have been reviewed, and recommendations have been implemented, follow up with [email protected]. You may need to complete and submit an inquiry form with additional information, photos, and measurements. Let Ergonomics know if you are working with Disability Management Services (DMS) as part of the interactive process.

Step 3.  Together with your supervisor, implement any recommended solutions. Order any required equipment directly from the Approved Product Lists. If you are working in coordination with DMS, reimbursement for costs may be available. Contact DMS with questions about reimbursement.

Step 4.  If other non-occupational issues are impacting your ability to perform your essential job functions, contact DMS for advisement on the interactive process and any other accommodations that may be needed. Call DMS at (415)476-2621.

 


 

Work-Related Pain or Injury

If you think you have sustained a work-related injury —

Step 1.  Notify your supervisor and complete this On-line Illness & Injury Reporting Tool.
Fax the EIR to Disability Management Services (DMS) within 24 hours (Fax: 415.353.3232). You may contact DMS directly at (415)476-2621 for assistance.

Step 2.  If an ergonomics evaluation is medically warranted, DMS will work with you and Sedgwick on scheduling this. Completion of online ergonomics training and self-evaluations in the UC Learning Center is required prior to the in-person or virtual ergonomics evaluation. Complete Ergonomics Essentials for Computer Users in the UC Learning Center. If performing laboratory work, also take Laboratory Ergonomics training.

Step 3.  After the training/evaluation is completed, work directly with your supervisor to implement recommendations and order required equipment, from the Approved Product Lists.

Step 4.  If other workplace accommodations are needed and/or implemented equipment or ergonomics adjustments are not mitigating the concern(s), contact DMS for further guidance on next steps in the interactive process. Call DMS at (415)476-2621.
