Summary
OEH&S conducts training classes for the Campus
Community on a regular basis. The classes meet the regulatory requirements
levied by OSHA and the California Department of Health Services. These cover
general health and safety issues, and do not replace requirements for
supervisors to train or make certain employees are trained in the specific
hazards of their workplace. The classes are described below.
OEH&S can also provide specialized training modules. Examples we've
recently developed include Basic Laboratory Safety for laboratory technicians
and
dishwashers, Safety for Facilities Management (Crafts,
Custodial, Grounds, and Office Personnel), Bloodborne Pathogens Training
for employees of the Dental
School. Often, we add the "specialized training" module to the regular
training schedule, once the module has been given, and its general usefulness demonstrated.
We can also provide assistance to supervisors, laboratory managers, and others
who have responsibility for training employees in workplace hazards. For
further information, contact your DSA or the OEH&S Training Coordinator.

Safety Training For Campus Personnel
The Hazard Communication
Standard, Radioactive Materials License, and Bloodborne
Pathogen Standard require that employees be provided with initial training
and information on
hazards relating to their jobs when they are hired or
assigned to a job involving these hazardous materials. Additional training
must be provided when
the employee is exposed to new hazards in the workplace.
In addition, periodic annual safety retraining must be provided to insure
employee's competency in safety.
The basic responsibility for employee training is with the Supervisors.
OEH&S can assist in providing training materials for meeting the legal
requirements.

It is required for all campus laboratory research personnel and graduate students to complete all safety training at the time of their initial assignment. Training for lab-specific hazards, and whenever a new hazard is introduced, is the responsibility of the supervisor.
Note: Additional training may be required based on job assignment including radiation safety, bloodborne pathogens, etc. For questions, please contact your Department Safety Advisor.
Please go to Research Online to register. It may take a few days for you to receive your username.
Documentation:
Users must submit a Universal
Hazardous Materials Use Form (Training Experience Verification)
to your DSA to add your name to PI authorizations.
Controlled
substance users also need to submit an Information
on User of Controlled Substances Form.

Safe
Shipping of Biohazards - online
Biohazardous materials are constantly being transported both among
UCSF campuses and between UCSF and facilities throughout the world.
The process of shipping these materials is highly regulated. Non-compliance
can lead to refusal to accept shipments, fines and other punitive actions.
If you or others in your laboratory are responsible for the transport
or movement of biological or biohazardous materials, at least one person
from your lab must be trained in the Safe Shipping of Biohazards.
Safe Shipping of Biohazards* is available
through Research
Online.
The training will
cover local, state, federal, and international
regulations regarding documentation and shipping
containers.
PLEASE NOTE: This training must
be renewed every 2 years. *Completion of Laboratory
Safety for Researchers is required prior to taking this class. Top
