About OEH&S

The Office of Environmental Health and Safety (OEH&S) is designated to assist the University of California, San Francisco in achieving its goal of maintaining a safe and healthy workplace. You may obtain further information on OEH&S from Section 550 of the UCSF Administrative Policy Website.

The Office is located on the Parnassus Campus as indicated in the map below (see "EHS"). If you are driving to campus, we have provided directions for your assistance.

Mission Statement

The mission of OEH&S is:

  • To protect the health and safety of UCSF staff, faculty, students, patients and visitors.
  • To ensure that the physical environment of the campus is a safe and healthy workplace.

Goals

The goal of the UCSF Office of Environmental Health and Safety is to fulfill its mission of promoting a safe research and patient care environment without limiting academic freedom.

In achieving these goals the primary focus of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety is on:

  • Training of UCSF employees.
  • Development and implementation of proper health and safety procedures.
  • Environmental and personnel monitoring to verify effectiveness of its programs.
  • Maintaining regulatory / administratively required records.
  • Development and maintenance of an effective emergency response program.

Office of the Director

Director: Robert Eaton
The Director of the Office of Environmental Health and Safety is:

  • Responsible for overall aspects of environmental health and safety at the
    University of California, San Francisco.
  • The certifying individual for controlled substances.
  • Responsible for all agency communications.

Biosafety Officer: Brynte Johnson
The Biosafety Officer is responsible for:

  • Maintaining the Biological Safety Program.
  • Reviewing all Biological Use Applications.
  • Approving studies considered "Exempt" from full Biosafety Committee Review.

Radiation Safety Officer: William Lew
The Radiation Safety Officer is responsible for:

  • Maintaining the Radiation Safety Program.
  • Reviewing all applications for use of radioactive materials or machine sources of radiation.

Campus Committees

UCSF has established a number of committees for the oversight of various activities related to health and safety. These committees include:

  • Biological Safety Committee (BSC)
  • Chemical Safety Committee (CSC)
  • Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) / Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC)
